FAQs - Back Pain


Q: I am a chronic low back sufferer and don't want to make things worse.  Can KPT help me? 

A: It is always best to speak with your doctor before starting any new exercise, and this is especially true for patients with back pain.  KPT was designed originally to help treat patients with back problems.  Strengthening your core can help take pressure off of spinal joints and discs, and provide stability for your lower back.  Most but not all lower back problems can be helped by improving core strength.  If any of the KPT exercises cause you to have more pain, stop doing them immediately and consult with your doctor.  It is okay to continue to do only the exercises which feel good.  

KPT will not help relieve pain caused by inflammatory arthritic conditions such as Lupus, Rheumatoid, or Psoriatic arthritis, since pain from these conditions are the result of an auto-immune process and not mechanical in nature.  However, patients with inflammatory conditions can benefit from a strong core as much as anyone else, and KPT is not contraindicated for sufferers of auto-immune conditions. Patients with pain in the back and down the leg caused by a herniated disc pinching a nerve root should avoid front raises and focus primarily on back raises at the beginning.  Stop doing KPT or any other exercise if they make your condition worse and consult with your doctor right away.
